DEVELOPING THE SKILLS TO THRIVE

Pathway 3 is a truly personalised journey. We work hand-in-hand with families to create individual learning plans (ILPs) and shape the curriculum around each child. This way, every student is understood, challenged, and supported at the level that’s right for them. Our goal is for children to feel happy, confident, and capable as they grow in both learning and life. Pathway 3 helps them build the academic, social, and everyday skills they need to thrive, guided by five key areas:
  • Communication – helping children find their voice, share their ideas, and build meaningful connections with others.
  • Independence – encouraging small steps toward self-reliance, from everyday routines to making confident choices.
  • Emotional Wellbeing – giving students the tools and safe spaces they need to understand feelings and feel secure in who they are.
  • Core Functional Skills – strengthening essential skills in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving through practical, meaningful activities
  • Physical Wellbeing – promoting movement, play, and healthy habits to build strength, coordination, and confidence.

Specialist Support

Our Pathway 3 students are surrounded by a caring team of teachers, families, and in-school specialists who work closely together to help every child flourish. Students benefit from small class sizes of up to 8 students with highly trained teachers and teaching assistants.

Specialist support is also part of everyday learning. Students have direct access to speech and language, occupational, and physiotherapists. Some children enjoy one-to-one sessions, while all classes take part in Whole Class Therapy, a supportive space where students grow in confidence, develop communication, and build independence.

In Secondary, this includes three speech and language therapy sessions and one occupational therapy session each week, planned with teachers to reinforce classroom learning. We also use tools like The Zones of Regulation to help students understand and manage their emotions as part of both therapy and daily school life.

SUCCESS AT EVERY STEP

From age 14, Pathway 3 students can access programmes that prepare them for further study or vocational routes. ASDAN qualifications in Personal Effectiveness and Employability help students explore their strengths, develop practical skills, and build confidence. Alongside this, students can work towards the Dover Court International School (DCIS) Diploma, which develops a broad set of skills to support independence, wellbeing, and everyday life beyond Dover Court. To achieve the DCIS diploma, students earn credits in:
  • English – demonstrating skills in reading, comprehension, writing, and transcription.
  • Maths – building understanding in number, geometry, money, and measurement.
  • Personal and Social Development – gaining confidence in safety, environmental awareness, health, and personal finances to strengthen independence and social skills.
  • Personal Portfolio – recording progress in a chosen elective in Art, Physical Education, Design Technology, Music, or ICT.
  • Work Experience and Service Learning – applying skills in real-world work experience and contributing positively to the community.
  • Health and Wellbeing – maintaining a log of health and wellbeing activities, showing commitment to a healthy and active lifestyle.

An Environment Built for Success

A comfortable and safe environment is the foundation for success, because only when sensory and emotional needs are met can students truly thrive academically, personally and socially.

Our purpose-built Pathway 3 building is at the heart of our campus, giving students easy access to therapists, sensory rooms, and calming spaces. We listen carefully to each child’s needs, whether that means noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, or chewable jewellery and encourage self-advocacy so students feel confident in telling us what helps them to succeed.

When extra support is needed, co-regulation spaces provide comfort and calm, from squeezing a ball or rhythmic tapping to simply resting in a quiet corner. By removing barriers and creating an environment that adapts to our students, we ensure every child feels accepted, supported, and ready to grow.

FAQs default title

  • How can my child progress into Pathway 1 and 2?
Try to avoid comparing pathways; the goal is not to “graduate” from support. The goal is for our students to thrive, whether that’s in Pathway 1, 2 or 3. If needs change over time, we’ll explore this thoughtfully through our
    integration process.

  • I want my child to be around neurotypical peers so they can learn from “good role models.” Isn’t that important?
It’s natural to want your child to learn from positive role models. At DCIS, we believe those role models can be found in all children, not just neurotypical ones. Every student brings their own strengths—whether that’s empathy, resilience, creativity, or curiosity—and our community grows richer when these qualities are shared. Students in all pathways learn and play alongside a diverse mix of peers. We want children to thrive as their authentic selves, not feel pressure to copy others. Research shows that when neurodivergent students are expected to “mask” their differences, it can affect their wellbeing. That’s why we focus on creating environments where each child is supported in the way they need, while still being part of the wider school community.
  • I want my child to do exams and/or go to university, but they can’t do that from this pathway, right?
At DCIS, every child is supported with expectations that are both challenging and realistic for their stage of development. For many students in Pathway 3, the next step may be vocational routes through work placements and training, or continuing their studies at a specialist college designed to build independence and open future opportunities. These are valued and purposeful pathways that set students up for meaningful adult lives. At the same time, we never put limits on what a child can achieve. Every student is unique, and we will work closely with you to explore the options that best fit your child’s needs, strengths, and aspirations.

  • Aren’t pathways separating students? Isn’t inclusion about keeping everyone together?
Equality and inclusion mean that every student can thrive. That doesn’t mean every child has to be in the same classroom doing the same thing. Each child is unique, and we make sure they can take part in learning, friendships, and school life in ways that meet their needs. In each pathway, classes are twinned to encourage both social and academic integration. This might mean joining specialist lessons, playing and socialising at break times, celebrating events together, or working alongside peers from other pathways. These shared experiences help every child feel connected, valued, and truly included.

  • What if my child falls behind academically because we focus on wellbeing and inclusion?
Progress is only possible when sensory and emotional needs are met first, as a regulated and accepted child has more cognitive bandwidth to participate and engage across learning and friendships. Academic gains may follow when these foundations are in place, and they will look different for each learner.
AN EDUCATION UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Wherever your child is on their educational journey, we’ll help them to go further. They’ll benefit from a fully personalised learning experience that nurtures their strengths and talents – and helps them achieve remarkable success.
